Vanity of the Gentile Mind

Eph.4:[17] This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,

Let us look today at some of the vain thoughts humanity has about eternity. Man can think what he wants but God is the judge. We will examine some of the vain thoughts of man in light of the Scriptures.

1) The vanity of man says as long as you are sincere in your belief system you will be okay.
Man thinks any belief system will get you there as long as you believe.

The Bible says different.

Matt.6:[7] But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

Matt.15:[9] But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Col 2:[18] Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

Man’s attempts of forming a religion are vain. The Bible says:

John.4:[23] But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

John 4:[24] God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

We are not to worship just anything or according to how we “feel”. God must be worshipped in truth and spirit. It is tantamount to put your faith in Jesus Christ and nothing else. The way of the cross is the only means of salvation. This is not some idea of man but the means by which God has provided for salvation.

John.14:[6] Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

There is only ONE way to Heaven and this is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

2) The vanity of man says there is no God.

The ignorance and vanity of man. God’s creation saying to the Creator, You don’t exist.

Rom.1:[21] Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
[22] Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

1Tim.6:[20] O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

1Cor.3:18] Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.
[19] For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
[20] And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

Only a fool could look at the intricacies of the human body and decide there is no Creator. If I were to tell you my car just put itself together wouldn’t you think I was nuts? Then why in the world do we give any credence to the fools who say the universe had no designer?

3) I am as good as the next guy

Col.2:[8] Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

Satan has deceived many into thinking they are good enough to enter Heaven. They compare themselves to others and feel they are okay in God’s eyes.
The fact of the matter none of us are good enough for Heaven. The standard for comparison is not “others” it is the Word. None of us can stack up.

Rom.3: [10] As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
[11] There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
[12] They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

In the book of Titus it states:
Tit.3:[4] But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
[5] Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
[6] Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
[7] That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

The only means to gain entry to Heaven is through the blood of Jesus Christ which He shed for every man.

4) The vanity of man thinks God wouldn’t send anyone to Hell because he loves man.

2Tim.2:[16] But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

Mankind needs to realize it is their sin and unrighteousness which sends them to Hell. It is true God wants all of mankind to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus. But there remains no forgiveness outside of His shed blood. You will go to Hell for rejecting God’s love and free gift of salvation.

John.3:[16] For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
[17] For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
[18] He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

May I encourage you to turn from your wicked ways, fall on your knees  ask God to forgive your sins and ask Jesus to come into your heart and commit your life to Him.

All Men

(let me preface this by stating in this lesson I refrained from making a lot of expounding but rather deliberately chose  to let the Word of God on the subject speak to your heart. For those who might disagree let their disagreement be with the Word of God as I am simply quoting the Word of God. There seems to be a current in the body of Christ to attempt to castigate sinners as if we are not sinners ourselves. It seems we are forgetting it is not by our works but God’s mercy we have been saved.)

Rom.5:[12] Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

The human race is massed into one classification: we are ALL sinners. Jesus died for the ungodly which is limitless because we are all ungodly.
As a Christian saved by God’s grace how am I to treat the lost? What is my attitude to be towards them who are not of faith? The New Testament instructs us on this very thing.

Let us begin by stating Jesus died for all men.

Ro 5:[18] Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

We should live as a walking, talking and breathing Bible towards the lost.

2Cor.3:[2] Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:

As a walking Bible we are to be honest to all men and live peaceably with them.

Rom.12:[17] Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
[18] If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

We are to do good to the lost.

Gal.6:[10] As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

We are to be calm and even keeled with the lost.

Phil.4:[5] Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.

We are to love the lost.

1Thes.3:[12] And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:

We are to be patient with the lost.

1Thes.5:[14] Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.
[15] See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

We are to pray for the lost with the knowledge that God wants all to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

1Tim.2:[1] I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
[2] For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
[4] Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

1Tim.4:[10] For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.

We are to be gentle to the lost.

2Tim.2:[24] And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,

Tit.3:[2] To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.

Whom Say Ye that I Am?

Whom say ye that I am?
One of the most important questions a person can answer is “Who do you say Jesus is?”
The answer to this can determine your eternal destiny.

When Jesus walked on the other men had differing opinions on who He was and where He came from.
There were those that thought of Him as simple a regular guy. One who had grown up with His brothers and sisters and had an ordinary birth and life but grew to be an extraordinary man.

Matt.13:[55] Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?

Some believed He was a resurrected prophet from the Old Testament sent to revive the nation of Israel to prominence and return their thoughts toward God Almighty.

Matt.16:[13] When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
[14] And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

Some thought He was indeed a prophet from the city of Nazareth.

Matt.21:[10] And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?
[11] And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.

Some thought He was indeed from God but nothing more than a teacher to instruct the nation of Israel in the ways of God and to heal the nation.

John.3:[1] There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
[2] The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

It is important for us to know and acknowledge He is God in the flesh come to save us from our sins.

1Tim.3:[16] And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Being a Witness

                                                                        Being a witness
Do people know you are a Christian? Can they tell by the way you act or talk?
Here are a few practical tips on being a better witness to the world around you.

1) Put God in your everyday conversation (11 Co 3:2)
God bless you
Praise the Lord anyway
When someone does you a courtesy or offers you help thank them in Jesus’ name. It is a good testimony and could open the door for further witnessing.

Pray in public (café) (1 Ti 4:4-5)
God would have us be a thankful people and when at a café the least we can do is bow our heads and express our thankfulness to God for the meal. I am not saying to be a spectacle and stand on the table and be a showboat but show as a testimony that you are thanking God and acknowledging the fact that all good things come from Him.

When someone tells you of a personal trial offer to pray for them (and do it) (1 Ti 2:1-4)
You might be surprised at the number of lost people who will positively respond to this. Let’s face it, the lost have no other intercessor for life. The prayer of the lost only gets heard if it is a request for salvation.

Commit some verses to memory and use quotes throughout your dealings with people. (Col 4:6)
The Word of God is powerful and can stick with a person long after a conversation is over. Look for every chance to plant a seed.

Be kind and courteous (Ro 12:18//Ro 13:8)
There is no lack of rude people in the world and every act of kindness gets noticed by someone. God expects His people to be kindhearted. A lot of testimony damage can be done by rudeness and lack of appreciation. The Bible tells us NOT to render evil for evil or railing for railing. Don’t let the devil ruin your testimony by getting angry with the lost.

Be honest (Ro 12:17//11 Co. 8:21)
If the cashier gives you too much change do you give it back? You should along with a comment on God expects honesty from His children. Cashier forget to ring an item up ? Let them know let’s not “talk” Christian let us “show” Christian.

Let God do the judging (Ro 14:12-13)
God saved you when you were a rotten lowdown sinner. We are to treat people with love. Sinners are going to sin. Sin is sin. We might categorize them but let us face it they are going to Hell because they reject the Savior and the only way to effect change in a heart is through the love of God entering in. I am not saying to condone someone’s sin but please remember God loves them anyway and wants them to come to a saving knowledge of Him.

Wear a t-shirt with Scripture (11 Co 4:2-3)
There are plenty of hateful and disgusting labels being worn by people. A good counterbalance are t-shirts which praise the Lord. It might open a door of witnessing to someone.

Always carry a gospel tract with you ( 1 Pe 3:15)
Leave them when the opportunity arises (waiting rooms, with your tip at the café, etc.)
Perhaps the most under used tool in the Christian arsenal. You never know who might end up with a gospel tract left behind. Plant the seed when and where you can.

If someone asks you what religion are you let them know:
1) A Christian first
2) Then tell them your religious affiliation assuring them verbally religion does not save you but being a Christian does.
Believe me I am personally as Baptist as you can get. But where the rubber meets the road your denomination cannot save you only a personal relationship with Jesus can. Besides if a person becomes a Christian they will become Baptist right? Just kidding.

From this day forward
A person through exercising the will may be able to change certain “bad” habits or course of their life but permanent changes can be made through Jesus. You may change your eternal destiny by giving your heart to the Lord.

Phil.3:[13] Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,”

I would like to encourage you today to forget the past and go forward for the Lord. Forgetting the past failures as they will discourage you and bring you down. Forgetting the past successes as they can make you complacent. Always living one day at a time with every morning bringing a clean slate. Making a determination each morning that you will serve the Lord and make progress  for the cause of Jesus Christ.

The old English word for “from this day forward” is henceforth. I would like to look at some awesome passages in the New Testament referencing “henceforth”.

Acts.18:[6] And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.

On three recorded occasions the Apostle Paul went first to the Jews with the gospel and was rejected. Once in Antioch, once in Corinth and then finally in Rome. As the Jews en masse continued to reject the gospel the door opened wider and wider to the Gentiles. After the rejection in Corinth the Apostle Paul told the crowd the words recorded in Acts 18:6.
What a joyous thing for us. Now as I sit here almost 2,000 years later and glory that the Lord saved me by His grace. The door is wide open for any person who will give their heart to the Lord and receive His free gift of salvation. I encourage you from this day forward to give your life to Jesus Christ.
Ask God to forgive your sins and open the door of your heart and ask Jesus to come in and take control of your life. He paid the price and gave His life on the cross and suffered the pains of Hell so that we do not have to.

Rom.6:[6] Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

After giving your heart to the Lord you become His servant. No longer living a life with your desires being the driving force behind your actions but surrendering each day to His will. Every day a clean slate with a determination by the power of the Holy Spirit to make it count for the Lord.

2Cor.5:[15] And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.
[16] Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.

Each day, from this day forward, becoming a little more like Jesus in our attitude, in our interactions with others, and reactions to the situations that come our way. Showing the love of Jesus in the things we say and do for others.

Eph.4:[14] That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

Each day, from this day forward, through careful study of the Scriptures and application of them to our lives we become stronger in our faith and steadfast in the hope given us by the Lord.

Eph 4:[17] This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
[18] Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
[19] Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
[20] But ye have not so learned Christ;
[21] If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
[22] That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
[23] And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
[24] And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
[25] Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
[26] Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
[27] Neither give place to the devil.
[28] Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
[29] Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
[30] And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
[31] Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
[32] And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Each day, from this day forward, being honest and loving. Doing what is right. Resisting the devil. Being kindhearted toward others. Determining to lift others up and not to bring them down.

2Tim.4:[8] Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

Each day, from this day forward, encouraged with the knowledge that there is a reward for those who seek to follow Jesus. Encouraged with the knowledge He is coming back to get you. Encouraged with the knowledge that this life isn’t all there is but we have a home reserved for us.

Gal.6:[17] From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.

Each day, from this day forward, not allowing men to hurt you or discourage you. Just moving forward for the Lord.

Eph.6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Our battle is not against the lost sinners but against the devil and his angels. Satan in pretense of light actually uses darkness to hide the truth from the lost.
I would like to show 7 kinds of darkness the devil uses to blind men from the light of the gospel.

Darkness of sin
John.3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
[20] For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

Men unwilling to give up their sinful ways and spurning Jesus who died for their sins. Refusing God’s grace preferring their sin over giving their heart to the Lord.

Darkness of ignorance
Eph.4:17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
[18] Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

Humanity so busy in the rat race of life kept in darkness. The duty of the Christian is to propagate the gospel, to be a light to those around them. Through personal walk, gospel tracts and outreach ministries of the church. The only way to combat ignorance is through knowledge.

Darkness of religion
2Cor.3:14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.

Perhaps the greatest darkness Satan uses is the darkness of religion. Thinking themselves okay with God by the false religious hopes of vain religion. Religion cannot save the human soul. It is a personal knowledge of Jesus.

Darkness created by carnal Christians
2Cor.4:1 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;
[2] But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.
[3] But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
[4] In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Those of us who are Christians who walk not after the way of faith create a darkness around us by not shining the light of the gospel to those around us.

Darkness of hate
1John.2:11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

God has shed His love on humanity through the death of His Son. Who died for our sins because of the love of God (Ro. 5:8) How can someone who is supposed to be a Christian claim to hate others? God loved us when we were unlovable. We cannot let the flesh control our lives and we are to love the lost as God does.

Darkness of self-satisfaction
Rev.3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

The world’s baubles can mesmerize a person to the point they think they have no need. We as Christians need to make evident through our testimony that this world is not an end and death is not final. We need to testify there is a judgment after this life and all of the world’s goods will not impact our eternal destiny. The moment we leave this world those things we have accumulated will be forgotten.

Darkness of human wisdom
Rom.1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
[22] Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

There can be a lot said in favor of education but let us say if it takes your mind away from God it is futile. I marvel at the fact that through human “wisdom” man drives a wedge between himself and His Creator.

Col.1:12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
[13] Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
[14] In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

2Cor.4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

2Cor.11:[4] For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

The theme of the preaching is JESUS, by which you receive the Holy Spirit and accept the truth of the gospel.
There are many churches around where a lot of things may be preached but the focus of any church’s message must be JESUS. For there is no other way to Heaven than through the door which is JESUS.

There are those indeed who preach another JESUS. Some preach He is an elevated angel. There are those who preach He is brother to Lucifer. There are those who preach He was a great man. But as Jesus Himself asked His apostles “whom say ye that I am?”. (Perhaps the greatest question in the Bible. Every man must answer this question for himself.)
We need to be preaching Jesus the Savior. We need to be preaching Jesus the Lord. We need to be preaching Jesus the King. The Jesus preached is God manifest in the flesh, died on a cross and returned to Heaven. (1 Ti. 3:16)

The Spirit we receive does not magnify Himself but rather draws all attention to the dying Savior. (Jn 15:26///16:13) There are those who would say you need to receive a spirit which magnifies himself and glories in other things rather than Jesus. This is not the Spirit that God sent.

The gospel accepted must be the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus (1 Co 15:1-4). There is no other.
They would preach a gospel with other requirements for salvation. They would preach a gospel, which is not a gospel, of works or of baptism or endurance. They would preach a gospel of faith in whatever you believe will be good enough to gain Heaven’s entry. This is a lie from the father of liars. There is none other name besides Jesus by which salvation is promised.

2Cor.13:[8] For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.
As Christians we must do all we can for the cause of Christ.

The truth should be in us.
2Cor.11:[10] As the truth of Christ is in me, no man shall stop me of this boasting in the regions of Achaia.

We must hear the truth, believe in the truth, trust in the truth.
Eph.1:[13] In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

We must stand in the truth.
Eph.6:[14] Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

We must speak the truth with love.
Eph.4:[15] But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

We must speak it to everyone.
Ep 4:[25] Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

We should manifest the truth (show with our walk)
2Cor.4:[2] But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.

We should rejoice in the truth.
1Cor.13:[6] Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

We should know the truth.
Col.1:[6] Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:

The church is the pillar of truth.
1Tim.3:[15] But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

We should study and rightly divide the truth.
2Tim.2:[15] Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

We should worship in truth.
John.4:[23] But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
